This is what it’s like to work at a big data startup in Canada
Business owners are having a tough time making the transition to big data.
While there are more jobs in big data now than ever before, many are struggling to find qualified candidates, according to a new report from the Canadian Institute for Business Research.
“The number of jobs that we’ve created for people to work on big data and machine learning are extremely limited.
And so the challenge that we face in Canada right now is that there are only so many jobs that can be created,” said Andrew J. Gorman, president of the Canadian Business Group of Canada.
Gorman says that in the past few years, there’s been a major expansion of new data science and machine language skills, which have also been used to hire more data scientists and engineers.
In 2018, more than a million Canadians had bachelor’s degrees in data science or machine learning, a 12.5 per cent increase from the previous year.
In 2019, that number jumped to 1.6 million.
The number of PhDs with those fields increased to 733,000.
“There are a lot of people who are working in this area, and the opportunity is there, but it’s a very slow process,” said Gorman.
There’s a lot that companies can do to help with the hiring process, said Gomer, but he says that’s not the only way to make sure the new hires are ready for the job.
He says companies can also provide training for their employees.
“So a lot companies, the way they do that is they train their employees in some particular skill, and then they offer some training in the next few months, and they can then continue to train people in that skill,” said J.J. MacLeod, senior analyst at the National Association of Business Statistics.
MacLeod says that for many small businesses, there is a mismatch between what the new hire can do and what they can offer.
“I don’t think it’s about having a skill that a person has, I think that it’s more about having some skills that a company can develop in that person,” said MacLeod.
“If you’ve got a person who is really good at building apps, but you’re also really good with building websites and a lot more, then you’re probably going to have a mismatch.”
With that in mind, the IBI Group is offering a few tips for companies looking to hire new employees.
It’s also important to keep your recruiting team focused on the talent you want to hire, MacLeod said.
“Be looking for people who have those skills, and those skills will help you fill the gaps that you’re creating for your existing staff,” said John MacDonald, CEO of the IBP.
MacLennan says companies should also make sure that candidates have experience in other areas, including data science, machine learning and computer vision.
If your new hires have experience working with machine learning or computer vision, he said, that will help them make more informed decisions about what they want to do next.
In addition, MacDonald says hiring a good candidate with a strong passion for data is critical.
“It’s going to be a really tough transition for people in the data science field, and it’s going, if you’re not in the right place, then it’s just going to take a lot longer,” said MacDonald.
“It’s not something that people want to take for granted.”
