The average monthly salary for the most common business categories is around $100,000, according to the latest data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
But for those who have a business in a smaller city or a smaller state, the average salary may be much higher.
The average salary is typically higher in the metro area, with an average annual income of about $60,000.
The median annual income for the 50 largest metro areas is $51,000 in 2015.
The largest metro area is San Francisco with an annual median income of $59,500.
The smallest metro area (Atlanta) is $25,000 less than the median.
Business Insider analyzed data from BLS to determine the average annual salary for each of the 50 most populous U.S. metro areas.
